About the Book
Sam Houston was a teacher, a lawyer, a war hero, and statesman. He is best known for defeating the Mexican Army in 1836 and establishing Texas as an independent nation. He served two terms as the president of the Republic of Texas and helped Texas to become the twenty-eighth state.
This farmer’s son led a fascinating life, spending three years among Cherokee Indians as a teenager and becoming the governor of Tennessee by age twenty-five. His ambition led him to Texas, where he convinced American Indians to fight the Mexicans alongside the Americans. After Houston’s stunning victory against Mexico, he kept peace with his American Indian allies and continued to lead Texas with passion and patriotism.
